Impact of Tags on Rankings

Google’s John Mueller answered a question about tags on blog posts and their impact on rankings.

The person asking the question wanted to know if there was any benefit to it.

Article Post Tags:

A website normally organizes the content through categorizing the content topics in a way that makes it easy for users to navigate to the topics of interest through the menu navigation system.

Tags are an additional way for users to navigate to similar content. But tags are generally not a part of the formal site navigation.

When a user finishes reading a web page they may find links (called tags) with keywords that link to similar content.

Difference Between Categories and Tags:

Categories are generally sections of a website that can be navigated from a menu located at the top of a web page.

The purpose of categories is for organizing content in a logical taxonomy of topics.

The purpose of tags is to help site visitors explore similar topics. Tags are typically displayed at the beginning and/or end of an article and sometimes displayed elsewhere along the right or left hand of the page.

History of Blog Post Tag Use:

Bloggers in the past used to prolifically link to other articles on a site using keywords in the tags. The reason for doing so was the belief that the keywords used in the tags might influence search engines to rank those articles for the keywords used in the tags.

What ended up happening was that a site would bloat with scores or hundreds of tag archive pages that linked to articles, with many of those tag archive pages listing mostly the same articles.

Those tag pages essentially became duplicate content, thin pages.

The practice of using tags to interlink content thus began to lose popularity. There’s nothing wrong with using tags to help users find similar content.

But overdoing the use of tags can become problematic because of the thin pages created, necessitating technical SEO solutions for essentially self-inflicted problems.

Do Article Category and Post Tags Help Rankings?

The person asking the question wanted to know if there was any benefit of using multiple categories and tags for articles.

“The post category and post tag does it have any impact on ranking of the blog post?”

John Mueller downplayed any SEO benefit while communicating other benefits of using tags.

To the question of whether there is a ranking benefit for using tags, Mueller answered:

“Not necessarily.

So it’s not necessarily that we would try to recognize tags on a page.

But these are links and potentially they go to… category page, your tag page and that could be another page that we could index or that we could use to pick up links to your articles.”

Mueller is saying that the use of tags could be a way to help Google discover more web pages about similar topics.

My preference is to link to articles that are specifically about a given topic. In my experience, links to specific articles tends to get more clicks than a bare keyword that links to an article archive.

In my opinion it’s a better user experience to present a link to a relevant article than to send a user to a page of links.

How to Get Your Website Indexed Quickly in Google ?

This is the most common question people when they start their website.

They wait to for weeks to get their site indexed on Google Search Engine.
When you launched a new website it does take few days to get it indexed.

I can guess many of you want to have your website Quickly indexed on Google Search.

To get indexed quickly in Google Search you have to follow some Quick & Easy steps.

So follow these steps to get indexed quickly:

* Post in any popular, open registration forum with the page or URL in there.
Since the Google bot is always crawling the forum, the chances are good it will find your link through your post.

* Submit your sitemap in Google Webmaster Tools. Submitting a sitemap is telling Google that your site is “crawler friendly,” and mapped out.

* Submit your site or page to Digg and Social Bookmark Sites like Del.icio.us or Furl.net. These social networks have large influence with Google.

* Set up a blog on your domain, even if you don’t like blogging. Blogs allow convenient pinging of the search engines. By posting a few posts and pinging Google, you invite the Google bot to check out your site, which will hasten indexing, often within a few days or less.

The blog can be removed later, once your site or page has been indexed.

Based on my observations, there are certain types of domains (usually in certain “dubious” niches), that have a tougher time getting indexed, even though they may not be blacklisted at all.

Get Backlinks to Your Website

How to Get Backlinks to Your Website

Your website’s page rank is dependent on a number of factors. Having “backlinks,” links to your website from other websites or blogs, will give your website a significant boost.

Backlinks are the links that direct traffic to your web site from someone else’s site.

The quality of the backlink is judged by the popularity and relevancy of the site from which it originates. Each backlink that exists can give more credibility to your website.

Therefore, the more quality backlinks that exist to your site, the higher page ranking it will reach in the search engines.

Paying for backlinks could end up costing you a fortune, especially if you make reoccurring payments to keep them active.

Many companies who offer paid backlinks are not favored by Google and could end up getting your site penalized and out of Google’s favor, as well. Let’s look at a few ways to get free backlinks that are worth the time and energy you will put into getting them. The first thing to look at is your website content.

Do you have something worth linking to? Quality content or useful tools will always lead to better backlinks. If you are providing information that is worth linking to, you will have a much easier time acquiring free relevant backlinks.

It takes time to build valuable content and pinpoint what drives your traffic, but once you have it, you’ll be amazed at the great links you earn.

Don’t forget to use your own websites and blogs as a resource. If you only have one website, it is recommended that you create other mini sites or blogs that you can use to support traffic to your main site.

You can create multiple free backlinks within them. This is a perfect place to start. Just be careful not to overdo it.

Google will pick up on you if you do too many too fast. Also, be sure to vary your anchor text. Probably the most common and effective way to get free backlinks is to submit your content or url to search engine directories.

The most economical way to do this is to purchase an automated submission service such as www.vodahits.com. The onetime expense is certainly worth it.

Writing articles is another excellent way to circulate your link. Stay on topic, include your backlink, and submit your articles to relevant websites. This method allows you to not only remain in control of the content in which your link is found, but you can also handpick the most valuable websites yourself. If you submit them to an article directory, make sure that they are categorized according to their theme.

Have you checked out your competition lately?

Do some investigating:
See where their links come from and solicit those websites for yourself. Some may want money or require an application, but you’re bound to gain a few more worthy links. It doesn’t hurt to ask.

Finally, always put our link in your online signature. Whenever you post on forums or message boards, this link will provide another connection to your site. You will be surprised at how many of those links actually stick and make a difference.

Getting quality backlinks takes time. You will need to invest some time on a regular basis to create a rich network of backlinks. Use these tips to ensure you are spending your time wisely.

By steering clear of any unethical practices you will enjoy the rewards of quality traffic and earn your website a secure, aggressive page ranking.

Five Steps to Increase your Google Page Rank

Google Page rank is based on back links.

Back links are Links pointing to your website from another website.

The more back links you have the higher your PR will be.

1. Join forums, forums are a great way to achieve links to your website. In most forums you are allowed to have a signature and in your signature you can put a link to your website. But another important note to look on is making sure the forum is somewhat related to your website.

You will still get credit if it's not, but if it's related to your website than you will be accomplishing two tasks at once.

You will be advertising for your website (bringing in targeted traffic) You will also be building your websites presence.

Your websites presence is very important to your survival. The more people see, or hear about your website the more credibility you will have and this increases your chances of having these visitors come back and possibly become leads.

2. Submit to search engine directories. Search engine directories are a good way to get a free link to your website. They also increase your chances at being listed higher on popular search engines like Google, and overture.

Most search engine directories allow you to submit to their website for free. This will allow you to increase your web presence by being listed on another search engine, and it will also be a free link.

Remember the more links you have the higher your PR will be

3. Using ezine ads (or newsletters). Creating an ezine will probably be the most beneficial step you can take to increasing your web presence. When you create an ezine you will be able to keep visitors coming back to your website for more by using signatures and giving special deals.

Ezine's will also allow you to increase your back links. By creating an ezine you can submit your information about your ezine to an ezine directory. This directory will than link to your website(thus giving you a free link).

4. Creating and publishing articles. Articles are an easy source of generating new traffic. You can include your signature in your article.

This will bring in more traffic from article submission directories.

Your signature usually consists of 4 to 8 lines. Usually the first line would be the title of the website that you are trying to advertise. The last line would be the link to the website and the lines in between these would be a sales pitch to draw your viewers into your website.

5. Links from related websites. Gaining links from related websites can be one of the most frustrating tasks you can attempt.

They are very easy to find, but can be somewhat difficult to obtain links from.

To find related websites, all you have to do is go to a search engine... say Google... and type in your subject. Maybe your website is based on ford mustangs.

You go to Google and type in ford mustangs, than you look around for pages that are somewhat related to your website. After you have done this (which should be very easy) you have to contact them in some way to get your link posted on their website.

This can be the most difficult task because a lot of webmasters ignore e-mail's from people requesting links because they don't see the importance of it at the time. Some other reasons could be that they are rarely online, or they delete spam mail and sometimes delete their important emails in the process.

Important note: When looking for link partners don't just link with websites that have a page rank of 4 or higher. Link with anyone and everyone you get a chance to. If you link to someone that has a page rank of zero, this will not hurt your page rank.

It will only increase it because you are getting a link back to your website. Google doesn't look at your back links page ranks to determine what yours is going to be. It simply looks at how many back links you have.

So if Google one day decided to link to a website that was just created and this website has a page rank of 0 and has a domain that goes something like this: mywebsite.geocities.com it's page rank wouldn't increase even though Google's page rank is 10, it's rank would still be zero because it would only have that one back link.

How to Improve Page Rank

PageRank is one of more than 100 factors Google uses in the ranking of you website and your resulting position on their search engine.

You get PageRank (PR) by having backward links from other website pages that have a higher PR rating than your site page the link is to.

The PR of your site is updated about once of month when Google updates their database of web pages.

For example if you have a backward link from a site that has a PR of 5, some of that PR be will transfered from their website to your website page they linked to.

These links are called backlinks.Sites with high PageRank will get crawled by the search engine bots more often, and the crawls will be deeper.

While Google takes into consideration the PageRank of your site, high PR doesn't always equate to a higher Search Engine Results Position (SERP).

You can have high PR and have a low SERP on a certian keyword phrase, while some other site can have low PR but have a high SERP on the same keyword phrase.

In your pursue for a high PR keep in mind that numerous relevant keyword anchor texted backlinks will get you a higher SERP than just raw high PR and that with numerous relevant keyword anchor texted backlinks will come PR.

You aim shouldn't be just for high PR, but for proper backlinks that will bring with them a higher PR.

Page Rank Algorithm:

The following will give you an idea of how many inbound links and what PR those inbound links need to be, for you to obtain the desired PageRank for your pages. The following pagerank algorithm equation is the relationship between two pages A and B, with the below example page A receiving an inbound link from page B.

PR-A = (0.15) + (0.85 x PR-B / TOL-B)

PR-A is the PageRank of Page A, PR-B is the PageRank of Page B, and TOL-B is the Total Outbound Links of Page B.

For example if you get a inbound link from a page that has a PR of 6 and on that page there is a total of 6 outbound links (counting the one to your page), a PR of 1 will be added to your page: 0.15 + (0.85 x 6/6) = 1.

If that one inbound link adds a PR of 1 to your page, and you wanted a PR of 5 it would take 5 similar inbound links.

By similar I mean pages that have a PR/TOL ratio of 1.

That could be a PR of 5 with 5 outbound links, or a PR of 7 with 7 out bound links and so on. A PR/TOL ratio of 1 will add to your page a PR of 1.

Using the PR/TOL ratio simplifies the RageRank algorithm equation and makes it easier for you to evaulate what PR a inbound link will add to your page.

When you are looking for inbound links just divide the PR of the page by its outbound links and this will give you a general idea of the PR a inbound link from that page would give you.

  • Using a Keyword Rich Title - This is a carefully researched term or key phrase people would search for in the search engines that would lead to your website. Generally, you would not use the name of your business unless it happens to be an effective keyword for your topic.

  • Use the Title Tag Correctly - You have seen pages scattered throughout the search engine results that have not inserted the title tags correctly. The page was picked up as, "Untitled" or "New Page."

  • Focus Your Content - Don't try to cram 10 different topics in on just one page! Concentrate on one topic per page, using your keyword rich content.

  • Use Text Links - Fancy menus look great, but usually the k.i.s.s. idea is best. (Keep it simple stupid!) If you want the search engines to find you, use text links. Add a site map to your website, along with a link to it on every page!
